Step 01 of the Process

Job search consultation with a recruiter of 30+ years

Client Engagement is the first step of the Tactical Job Search process. It is a free 30-minute discovery session with Charles N. Black, who has recruited for more than 30 years. You talk through your background and goals, and you leave with a job search strategy and a roadmap for the next 60 days.

Most people open a search by editing their resume and applying to postings. When that does not produce interviews, the cause is often earlier: an unclear target role, or a resume built for a job you no longer want. The discovery session is where you find out which one it is.

How the discovery session works

01

Share your background

You walk through your work history and your main accomplishments, so the conversation starts from facts.

02

Define the target

You say which role and level you want, and by when.

03

Find the obstacle

You name what is holding the search back. For some people it is the resume. For others it is a lack of introductions, or interviews that do not turn into offers.

04

Review the process

You get an overview of the five steps and which ones apply to you. Some people need the full process and others need one step.

05

Agree on a plan

You and Charles settle on a plan that fits your needs and gets you to your next role efficiently, in both time and cost.

What you leave with

You leave with a personalised job search strategy and a roadmap for the next 60 days, built around your target role and your market. The roadmap sets out which steps you will work through and in what order. For one person the first priority is the resume. For another it is outreach or interview preparation. The session determines which.

Who it is for

The process is industry and profession agnostic. It is built for:

Why recruiting experience matters at the start

Charles recruited for more than 30 years: 10 years in agency recruiting, then corporate talent acquisition from 1998, mostly at Fortune 100 technology companies including Dell, AMD, Apple, and Freescale. He also worked with venture-backed startups and led hundreds of executive-level and specialized searches.

His approach rests on listening to both hiring managers and job seekers. He has seen hiring from the employer’s side of the table, and that view shapes how the first session is run.

Where the discovery session fits

The session sets the direction for the four steps after it:

  1. Client Engagement
  2. Resume Development
  3. Targeted Outreach
  4. Interview Preparation
  5. Negotiating Compensation

Single sessions or the full process

You can book individual steps, or a single session for a specific problem, such as a resume review before an application deadline or interview preparation for a role you have already been shortlisted for. Charles recommends the full process, from first call to signed offer, because the steps build on each other.

How booking works

New clients book the free discovery session. Existing clients can book as often as they like, even daily, to move through the process at their own speed. Sessions run on Zoom or Google Meet, and bookings are confidential.
